Kegel or pelvic floor exercises
Kegel exercises can help you prevent or control urinary incontinence. Kegel exercises strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, which support the uterus, bladder, small intestines and rectum. The pelvic floor is basically a sheet of muscles that support your bowel and bladder. These muscles hold up the bladder and help keep it from leaking.
Are Kegel exercises right for me? Will I get any benefit from them?
- A sudden feeling or urge to urinate just before you lose a large amount of urine.
- Maybe you leak a few drops of urine when you are watching a funny movie and laugh. Or maybe it happens when you cough or sneeze.
There are also Kegel exercise weights, these vaginal weights or Kegel trainers are designed to complement traditional Kegel exercises.
These particular products aim to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, just as the Kegel exercises do. A lot of times women might be working the wrong muscles such as the leg or abdomen. These devices claim to target the pelvic floor muscles more efficiently and effectively.
They work by sending mild electrical currents to nerves in your lower back or your pelvic muscles that are involved during urination. This can be used for both urge and stress incontinence.
Retraining a bladder
This process is meant to increase the time between urinating. It is a first step to non-surgical treatment of urinary incontinence. It can also be called distraction or delay techniques as well. This can simply be having a thought about something other than going to the bathroom to delay your trip to the restroom.
Sometimes what happens is people feel they should empty their bladder more often and this actually can sometimes cause more harm than good. What happens is people will try going to the bathroom more often, thinking if the bladder is empty they will not have an accident.
However this will make urinary incontinence worse is some cases by causing the bladder to hold less urine and can cause it to be more overactive which results in more accidents. The training of the bladder can help it hold more urine and be less active.
Maintain a healthy weight
Being overweight can directly be associated with urinary incontinence. Focus on reducing your weight in order to live a healthy lifestyle. There are many things you can do that add up over time.
- Eat a diet of fruits and vegetables.
- Take a walk of 20 minutes or more 4 days a week.
- One of my favorite, when going to a store try parking the farthest away from the entrance. You get a nice little walk in.
- Increased fiber intake and reduce your refined grains intake.
- Avoid sugars and cut out saturated fats where you can.
- Avoid processed food.
Certain foods can irritate a bladder as well, such as the following:
- Acidic fruits (oranges, grapefruits, limes, lemons, and fruit juices)
- Sorry everyone for this one, spicy foods. You may love it but your bladder might not.
- Tomato based products
- Carbonated drinks
Take these foods out of your diet for up to week and see if your condition’s improve. If they do start adding them back one at a time to narrow down what might be causing more issues.
Reduce caffeine and alcohol intake
Nobody likes to hear this one, however it can really help. Cutting these from your diet may help to see if your symptoms decrease. If your incontinence does get better, you can certainly try adding things back into your diet to see what your body can take.
Alcohol can act as a diuretic, basically it causes an increase the production of urine and the need to go more often. Beer, wine and other alcoholic beverages work as a stimulant in the bladder and can increase incontinence.
Caffeine can also act in a very similar way as alcohol as well. It can cause inflammation of the bladder, which can in turn increase your feeling or urge to go to the restroom.
How many reasons do you need to quit? Well here is one more reason to ditch the habit. One reason is smoking can make you cough, which can lead to irritated muscles in your bladder. This in turn can cause increased urine leakage.
Smoking tobacco also increases the chemicals your body takes in, specifically in your bladder. These chemicals can build up in your bladder over time. These chemicals can damage the inner lining of the bladder and increases your risk to getting bladder cancer.
As you can see there are many ideas you can do at home or fairly quickly that can help women with urinary incontinence. A lot of people suffer and it affects many parts of their lives.
